In this guide, we’ll explore the essential conditions for growing wheat, paddy (rice), maize (corn), moong (mung beans), and bajra (pearl millet). By understanding soil types, weather conditions, temperature, pH levels, water needs, and fertilizers, you can enhance your farming success.

Soil is the foundation of farming. Different crops thrive in different soil types:

  • Wheat: Prefers well-drained, loamy soil rich in organic matter. Sandy soils can work but need adequate moisture.
  • Paddy (Rice): Grows best in clayey soil that can retain water. Paddy fields are often flooded, making clay a suitable choice.
  • Maize: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soils, particularly loamy or sandy loam soils. A good balance of clay and sand is ideal.
  • Moong (Mung Beans): Prefers light, well-drained sandy loam or clay loam soils. It grows well in moderately fertile soils.
  • Bajra (Pearl Millet): Adaptable to poor, sandy, or loamy soils but needs good drainage.

Weather greatly affects crop growth. Every crop has its preferred temperature requirement:

  • Wheat: Grows best in cool temperatures between 10°C to 25°C. Extreme heat can reduce yield.

Water is essential for crop growth. Here’s how much water each crop typically needs:

  • Wheat: Requires about 450-650 mm of water during the growing season. Regular irrigation is necessary, especially during flowering and grain filling.
  • Paddy: Needs abundant water, around 1,200-1,500 mm. Fields are usually flooded during the growing season.
  • Maize: Requires 500-800 mm of water. Adequate moisture is essential during germination and tasseling.
  • Moong: Needs about 400-600 mm of water. It is drought-resistant but needs moisture during flowering.
  • Bajra: Requires around 300-500 mm of water. It is drought-resistant and can survive with less water, but consistent moisture improves yields.
Fertilizers provide essential nutrients to crops. Here’s what each crop typically needs:
  • Wheat: Requires nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. A common recommendation is NPK 120-80-40 kg/ha.
  • Paddy: Needs NPK, with a common rate of NPK 100-50-50 kg/ha. 
  • Maize: Requires NPK fertilizers, usually around 150-100-50 kg/ha. Regular soil testing can help adjust nutrient levels.
  • Moong: Requires less fertilizer, around NPK 20-40-20 kg/ha, as it can fix atmospheric nitrogen.
  • Bajra: Needs around NPK 30-40-20 kg/ha. 

Soil pH affects nutrient availability. Here are the optimal pH levels for each crop:

  • Wheat: Prefers a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
  • Paddy: Grows best in acidic to neutral pH, ideally between 5.5 to 7.0.
  • Maize: Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0.
  • Moong: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH, around 6.0 to 7.5.
  • Bajra: Grows well in a broader pH range of 5.5 to 8.0, making it adaptable.
